A more refined full size truck.

In the American market, the full sized truck is king. In the south, everybody and their mother drives one. In the north, 4-wd Silverados and F-150s are everywhere. So it’s no surprise that every carmaker wanted a piece of that lucrative market.

Toyota finally threw its hat in the ring with its full sized Tundra and right away, it was a hit. It combined Toyota’s legendary build quality and smooth engines with full size dimensions and lots of cup holders. It was obvious that buyers wanted a more refined truck as eager customers snapped up the American made truck.

With increased competition from domestic truck makers, Toyota completely redesigned the Tundra and added even more American goodies. The Tundra’s silky smooth 4.7L V8 now made over 270-hp and there was a new 5.7L V8 with a staggering 381-hp. Thanks to the new motor and a stiffer frame, Tundra can easily tow 10,000lbs. A new 6-speed automatic is available, and a trailer tow package adds a transmission oil temperature gauge.

On the road, there’s plenty of power from either engine (even the 4.0 V6 has good power). Road manners are excellent. Bumps and road imperfections are soaked up by the Tundra’s considerable weight. Making this one of the smoothest riding trucks on the market. The Limited’s optional 20″ wheels do affect the ride quite a bit.

Three cab styles are available on the Toyota Tundra; regular, DoubleCab (an extended cab with 4 fully opening doors) and the CrewMax with its 4 conventional doors. Passenger room is excellent in all three, and the seats are comfortable and supportive. There’s storage nooks and cup holders everywhere. And the center console can even accommodate a laptop computer and hanging files. Build quality is typical Toyota tight and there’s even an optional navigation system and backup camera with an angled view of the hitch. Domestic competitors could learn a thing or two from the Tundra’s civilized interior.

Several bed lengths and 4-wd systems are offered on the Toyota Tundra. With the extensive variety of bed lengths, cab layouts and trim levels, there are 44 different combinations available. This means that there is a Tundra for almost any application.

If you need a full size truck, take a long, hard look at the Toyota Tundra. It may be more expensive than a GM, Ford or Dodge…but it’s worth it.
